ASME SB166 Alloy 601 Round Bars is not an age hardening alloy; cold working is the only available means of hardening. In ASME SB166 Alloy 601 Bars, softening by annealing begins at about 1600 Degree F (871 Degree C), and is reasonably complete after 10-15 minutes of heating at 1800 Degree F (982 Degree C).
Above this temperature in ASME SB166 Alloy 601 Rods, grain growth may be objectionable, although very brief heating at 1900 Degree F will cause complete softening without undue grain growth. Since the rate of cooling has no effect on the softening, Inconel UNS N06601 Round Bars may be water quenched or air cooled. ASTM B166 Nickel Alloy 601 Round Bars can be both hot formed and cold formed using typical processes. Meanwhile, hot working in ASTM B166 Nickel Alloy 601 Bars should be performed between 1600 Degree F and 2250 Degree F avoiding any work between the ranges of 1200 Degree F – 1600 Degree F, because the ductility decreases in this temperature range.
